Abstract
Phosphate coatings are produced on iron, steel and/or zinc (including galvanized) surfaces by contacting them, e.g. by spraying at 38-60 DEG C., with a chlorate-accelerated zinc phosphate coating solution, e.g. prepared by dissolving ZnO and preferably NiO in H3 PO4 and adding water and NaClO3, in which nitrite is added, e.g. as NaNO2 or HNO2, to establish and maintain a concenration of 0.03 to 1.0 g/l NO2 to eliminate build-up of ferrous ion. The solution may also contain Cu and nitrate.
