Abstract

An adherent coating is formed on a surface of titanium or zirconium or an alloy containing a predominant amount of titanium or zirconium by treating the surface with an aqueous solution of manganese dihydrogen phosphate containing free fluoride ions and an addition agent consisting of one or more of: a nitrate, nitrite, chlorate, saccharin and sucrose. The weight and adhesion of the coatings are improved by the presence of ammonium ions, either with or without sodium or potassium ions or both, or a mixture of sodium and potassium ions. Preferably, when coating titanium the solution also contains a soluble titanium salt, e.g. titanyl sulphate or potassium fluotitanate, and when coating zirconium a soluble zirconium salt. The fluoride ions may be derived from any fluoride or bifluoride, such as the alkali metal and ammonium fluorides and bifluorides. Specific examples of the addition agent are sodium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, sodium chlorate and sodium nitrate. An example of a concentrated stock solution contains Mn(H2PO4)2. 2H2O, HNO3, NaNO3 NaHF2, K2TiF6 and H2O and before use, manganese carbonate may be added to reduce the acidity thereof. The metal may be subjected to a nitric acid-hydrofluoric acid activation pretreatment. When used as a base for paint, the coating is preferably rinsed with chromic acid and when the metal is to be cold-worked, e.g. drawn, a conventional drawing lubricant, e.g. a stearate soap, is preferably applied.
