Abstract

Metal surfaces, particularly ferrous, zinc and zinc alloy surfaces, are treated with a solution containing 0.05-17 per cent. of chloride or bromide, at least 0.025 per cent. of complex fluoride, the complex fluoride content being 0.5-2 times the chloride or bromide content, and chromate in quantity 0.05-5 times the total quantity of chloride or bromide and complex fluoride, the solution having a pH of 0.8-5.5 and being substantially free from phosphate and arsenate ions; the chloride or bromide content being calculated as ammonium chloride; the complex fluoride content, on the basis of equivalent fluorine content, as ammonium silicofluoride; and the chromate content as CrO3. The complex fluoride may be introduced as ammonium or sodium silicofluoride, fluoboric acid, ammonium fluozirconate, sodium fluotitanate or fluostannic acid, the chromate as chromic acid, alkali chromate or dichromate and the chloride as common salt, ammonium chloride or hydrochloric acid. Nitrates and acetates may be present. The metal surface may subsequently be rinsed with water or an acid chromate rinse. U.S.A. Specifications 2,114,151 and 2,276,353 are referred to.
