Abstract

A ferrous surface is coated with an iron phosphate using a solution containing alkali metal or ammonium phosphate 50 to 96%, fluoride ions 1 to 10%, molybdate ions 0.1 to 5%, oxalate ions 0.5 to 10%, and ferric ions 0.1 to 3%. In addition a low foaming wetting agent and sugar 1 to 10% may be included. After rinsing in water, the surface may be given a chromate rinse. The ferric ions may be ferric oxalate, nitrate chloride, sulphate or hydroxide. The oxalate ions may be oxalic acid, alkali metal or ammonium oxalate or ferric oxalate. The molybdate may be molybdic acid or alkali metal or ammonium molybdate.
