Abstract

Cadmium surfaces are brightened by treatment in an aqueous acid solution with a pH of 1.0-3.5 and comprising 0.08-1 g/l trivalent chromium ions, 0.1-18 g/l of nitrate ions, and 0.4-5.2 g/l of ions selected from sulphate ions and the combination of fluoride and sulphate ions, the solution containing a maximum of 0.02 g/l of hexavalent chromium ions at a pH of 1-2 and less than 0.3 g/l of hexavalent chromium at a pH of 2-3.5. The solution may also contain 0.1-3 g/l of zinc and/or cadmium ions with a fluoride ion concentration of 0.2-0.4 g/l and a sulphate ion concentration of 0.75-1.5 g/l. The solution is maintained at 45-150 DEG F. during the process and the base treated may be any cadmium surface such as electrodeposited cadmium or a cadmium coated steel. The solution is prepared by adding to dilute nitric acid a dry powder mixture of sodium acid fluoride, chromium fluoride, and the sulphate of zinc and/or cadmium. Complex fluoride salts such as fluoborate and fluosilicate may also be added.
