Abstract

A bath for producing a phosphate coating on ferrous articles is formed by dissolving in water one or more of the acid phosphates of calcium, strontium, and barium. One or more of the sulphates of zinc, manganese, cadmium, and iron may be added, and the amount added may be such that the bath contains a mixture of acid phosphates of calcium &c. and acid phosphates of zinc &c. Alternatively, sufficient sulphate may be added to effect a complete precipitation of the calcium &c., the bath consisting of the acid phosphate of zinc &c. with or without an excess of sulphate. An oxidizing agent such as a nitrate, nitrite, bromate, chlorate, or iodate may be added to oxidize the hydrogen evolved. Baths formed and replenished by dissolving varying amounts of calcium dihydrogen phosphate, zinc sulphate, and sodium nitrate are described. The treated articles may subsequently be painted, oiled, or lacquered.
