Abstract

In a process for the production of corrosion-resistant, paint-holding coatings on metals by the use of a general purpose solution effective on aluminium, iron and zinc surfaces, surfaces composed solely or preponderatingly of only one or two of these metals are subjected to the action of a hot aqueous solution containing soluble compounds of each of these metals, a dihydrogen phosphate, a complex fluoride and an oxidizing agent, the solution being maintained by adding thereto a soluble compound of the metal or metals absent from or only sparingly present in the surfaces undergoing treatment. The complex fluoride is preferably a fluoborate, added as such, or as boric acid and sodium bifluoride; the phosphate is zinc dihydrogen phosphate; and iron or aluminium is added as ferrous sulphate or aluminium nitrate. Specification 655,070 is referred to.
