Abstract
In a process and solution for producing a protective coating on metal surfaces, e.g., iron, steel, zinc, aluminium and its alloys, the surface is treated with an aqueous solution containing the acid radical of phosphoric acid and having dissolved therein a minor proportion, i.e., an amount up to their maximum solubility in the bath, of one or more complex anhydrous ammonium metallo phosphates and/or solid solutions of one such complex phosphate in another such complex phosphate. The complex phosphate may be that of a divalent metal (zinc, cobalt, magnesium, cadmium) in which case all the metal is in the anion, the structural formula being given as:- <FORM:0599784/III/1> Where M is the divalent metal; or may be that of a trivalent + metal, e.g., aluminium, chromium, for which no structure is said to be known but in which the metal is not all in the anion. These phosphates are normally added to the phosphating bath-the baths described in Specifications 419487 and 447,176, [both in Group II], being preferred-in solution in phosphoric acid. Specification 599,728 also is referred to.ALSO:In a process and solution for producing a protective coating on metal surfaces, e.g. iron, steel, zinc, aluminium and its alloys, the surface is treated with an aqueous solution containing the acid radical of phosphoric acid and having dissolved therein a minor proportion, i.e. an amount up to their maximum solubility in the bath, of one or more complex anhydrous ammonium metallo phosphates and/or solid solutions of one such complex phosphate in another such complex phosphate.
