Abstract
Iron, steel, zinc or zinc alloy surfaces are immersed in a weak solution of acid ferrous phosphate and phosphoric acid containing a sulphonated aromatic hydrocarbon having an isopropyl radicle in the nucleus, such as isopropyl naphthalene sulphonic acid, as a wetting agent; ions of one or more of manganese, cobalt, nickel or zinc produced by secondary ionisation of ammonium metal pentametaphosphates; and a reducing agent consisting either of hydroxylamine orthophosphate or hydroxylamine amidophosphate. Treatment is preferably effected at 96-100 DEG C.
