Abstract
An aqueous solution for producing coatings on metal surfaces has a pH of 1-2.4 and contains oxalate ions and one or more soluble organic compounds with <FORM:0810546/II/1> groups. The oxalate ions may be introduced as oxalic acid, alkali metal oxalate or ferric oxalate; and the organic compound may be thiourea a xanthate or a dithiophosphoric acid ester of the aliphatic or aromatic series, and may be introduced as the alkali metal compound. The following ingredients may also be present: PO4 ions, added as phosphoric acid or iron or manganese phosphate; ions of trivalent iron or of manganese, added as FeCl3, Fe2 (SO4)3, NH4Fe (SO4)2, MnO, MnCO3 or MnSO4; and an accelerator, e.g. sodium sulphite, sodium bisulphite, or alkali metal-thiosulphate, -hydrosulphite, or -thiocyanate. The coating facilitates the subsequent cold-working, e.g. drawing, of the metal. Metals which may be coated include copper, zinc, nickel, chromium, aluminium, iron and steel; stainless steel compositions are given containing C in the range 0.05-0.12 per cent, Si in the range 0.31-0.53 per cent, Cr in the range 17.98-18.2 per cent and, in certain cases, Ni in the range 8-18 per cent, Mo in the range 1.8-2.01 per cent, Nb 0.1 and 0.9 per cent, Cu 1.9 per cent, and Ta 0.2 per cent. Specification 522,954 is referred to.
