Abstract

534,471. Coating magnesium and its alloys; electrolysis. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Aug. 21, 1939, No. 24062. Convention date. Nov. 14, 1938. [Class 82 (ii) [Also in Group XXXVI] To produce a protective coating on an article of magnesium or its alloys, the alloy article is first treated with a solution containing a soluble fluoride and then with the alkali or ammonium salt of the oxy-acid of an element selected from the group consisting of chromium, phosphorus, molybdenum, selenium, titanium, tungsten and vanadium. The treatment may be carried out electrolytically, the article forming the anode. In an example, a casting of a magnesium alloy containing 6 per cent. of aluminium, 3 of zinc and 0.1 of manganese was cleaned by a short dip into a solution containing nitric and sulphuric acids immersed for 5 minutes in a 15 per cent. solution of hydro-fluoric acid and then rinsed in cold water. The casting was then immersed in a boiling 10 per cent.' solution of sodium dichromate and rinsed in cold water and dried. Instead of the solution of the salt, a molten bath may be used.
