Abstract
508,723. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and magnesium and their alloys. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd. Feb. 15, 1938, Nos. 4633 and 4634. Convention dates, Feb. 25, 1937, and April 13, 1937. [Class 41] [Also in Group II] Protective. layers are produced on magnesium and magnesium base alloys by anodic treatment in a saturated or almost saturated aqueous solution of a neutral fluoride or silicofluoride the solubility of which is at least about 30 per cent at 20‹ C. Suitable fluorides are those of potassium and ammonium and double fluorides of zinc and alkali metals ; suitable silicofluorides are those of magnesium and zinc. The electrolyte may also consist of a saturated or almost saturated aqueous solution of a mixture of neutral fluorides and/or silicofluorides the joint solubility of which is at least about 30 per cent at 20‹ C. ; such an electrolyte is also applicable to the production of protective coatings on aluminium and aluminium base alloys by anodic treatment. The coatings are more absorptive than those obtained by the use of an electrolyte containing a single component. Mixtures of potassium and ammonium fluorides may be employed. The treatment is carried out with a current density of the order of 2 amps per sq. dcm., and without external supply of heat. Treatment of the following alloys is described (i) magnesium base alloy, containing 2-3 per cent of zinc and 5-6 per cent of aluminium ; (ii) magnesium base alloy, containing 2.5 per cent of manganese ; (iii) magnesium base alloy containing 9 per cent of aluminium, 1.5 per cent of zinc and 0.8 per cent of manganese ; (iv) alloy containing 93 per cent of aluminium and 7 per cent of magnesium.
