440,550. Electrolytic surface treatment of metals. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. July 8, 1935, No. 19488. Convention date, July 7, 1934. [Class 41] Light metals such as magnesium and aluminium and their alloys are provided with coatings containing fluorine compounds by anodic treatment in a fused bath containing a fluorine compound of low melting point and an oxygen compound of boron. A suitable bath consists of potassium bifluoride with a smaller quantity of boron trioxide or boric acid or both ; with a bath containing 30 per cent of boron trioxide, the electrolysis may be carried out at 165‹ C. The fused bath is preferably covered with a layer of an organic compound, such as paraffin, which is liquid at the working temperature and does not react with the bath. An alloy of magnesium containing small proportions of aluminium and zinc or of aluminium and manganese may be treated.
