Abstract
500,113. Electrodeposition. of nickel on aluminium. FRASCH, J. July 2, 1937, No. 18485. Convention date, July 2, 1936. [Class 41] Aluminium base metals are prepared for nickel-plating by cathodic treatment in a degreaaing bath containing an alkali metal cyanide and a sulphate of a metal which is more electropositive than aluminium and less electropositive than nickel, e.g. sulphate of manganese, zinc or cadmium. A thin film of the metal is deposited. An organic colloid is preferably added to the bath. Suitable degreasing baths contain, per cent: (i) manganese sulphate 3-5, sodium cyanide 2-6, ammonia, 2-8, gelatine 0À5-1; (ii) zinc sulphate 4-6, sodium cyanide 4-8, caustic potash 2-8, dextrine 0À5-1. A voltage below 2 is preferably employed. The nickel bath subsequently employed preferably contains a poly-ammino-nickelo-sulphate. Suitable baths contain, per cent : (i) hexaammino-nickelo-sulphate 15-45, ammonium acetate 1-5, magnesium sulphate 10-15; (ii) di-aqua-tetra-ammino-nickelo-aulphate 15- 45, ammonium sulphate, magnesium chloride 8-10. Chromium or tin may be plated over the nickel.
