Abstract
499,599. Electrodeposition of alloys. ROBERTS, S. T. July 24, 1937, No. 20538. [Class 41] Ferrous or other metal articles are protected against corrosion by electrodeposition of an alloy containing mercury and cadmium from an alkaline bath containing alurniniuxn in solution in addition to the constituents of the alloy. Suitable baths contain per gallon of water (i) sodium cyanide 12 oz, caustic soda 12 oz., zinc sulphate 10 oz., cadmium sulphate 4 oz., bichloride of mercury 2 oz., potassium aluminium sulphate 3¢ oz., dextrine 2 oz., ammoniated glycerine 1“ gms. ; (ii) sodium cyanide 12 oz., caustic soda 12 oz., cadmium sulphate 12 oz., bichloride of mercury ¢-2 oz., potassium aluminium sulphate 2 oz., cobalt sulphate “-2 oz., dextrine 2 oz.; (iii) sodium cyanide 12 oz., caustic soda 12 oz., cadmium sulphate 12 oz., bichloride of mercury ¢-2 oz., potassium aluminium sulphate 2 oz., nickel sulphate “-2 oz., dextrine 2 oz. The anode may consist of an alloy or mixture of zinc, cadmium and mercury in the ratio 8 : 4 : 1 or 8 : 2 : 1, or of cadmium and mercury in the ration 9 : 1 or it may consist of an inner tube of zinc and mercury and an outer tube of cadmium and mercury secured to an intervening conductive support. A cadmium anode may be carried. by a cobalt or nickel member. The articles to be plated are suspended by aluminium carriers which preferably penetrate into the recesses of the articles. The articles are preferably connected as anodes for a short period before connection as cathodes for plating. Undue prolongation of the cathodic step produces a friable deposit which may be brushed off from the underlying coating. The container may be a glass-lined steel tank.
