Abstract

533,610. Electrodeposition of alloys. LOWINGER, V. A., and BAIER, S. W. Oct. 25, 1939, No. 28678. [Class 41] In the electrodeposition of alloys of tin with copper, nickel, cobalt, cadmium, zinc, antimony &c. and particularly alloys with a tin content above 30 per cent., the plating solution is replenished by the use alternately of anodes of tin and the alloying metal. In an example for depositing a tin-copper alloy, the plating solution contains sodium stannate, sodium cuprocyanide, caustic soda, sodium cyanide and rochelle salt. The plating bath a with a central cathode e is operated for some time with copper anodes c<1>, c<2>. These are removed and replaced by tin anodes b<1>, b<1>. The anodes are connected through separate ampere-hour meters f, g, to a change-over switch h. The tin anodes are polarized to form an oxide coating on their surfaces by lowering them slowly into the solution while the current is flowing. Specification 525,364 is referred to.
