Abstract

741,864. Electrodeposition of alloys of copper and tin. SILVERCROWN, Ltd. April 28, 1953 [June 4, 1952], No. 14118/52. Class 41. In the electrodeposition of alloys consisting mainly of copper and tin, the electrolyte includes a primary brightener, comprising one or more soluble compounds of lead or zirconium. particularly oxides, carbonates, cyanides, tartrates or acetates. The electrolyte may also include a secondary brightener comprising metallic salts of organic acids such as acetates, cyanates, thiocyanates, tartrates or citrates. An organic salt of lead or zirconium may serve as both a primary and a secondary brightener. The electrolyte may be agitated by pumping or by blowing in compressed air, or the articles being plated may be moved relatively to the electrolyte by moving the member from which they are supported. The anodes used may comprise 80 to 95 per cent copper and 5 to 20 per cent tin, and may also include up to 2.5 per cent of aluminium or up to 3 per cent of an alloy of aluminium and magnesium. The electrolyte may comprise 0.01 to 1 gram per litre or 0.003 to 0.3 per cent by weight of total solids of the lead or zirconium compound. Examples of electrolytes to which the primary brightener is added include copper cyanide, copper carbonate, copper oxide or copper sulphite, sodium or potassium stannate, sodium or potassium cyanide, sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium, potassium or ammonium citrate, and citric acid. Specification 732,538 is referred to.
