Abstract

801,460. Electroplating with copper. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 29, 1955 [May 3, 1954], No. 12568/55. Class 41. To an aqueous alkaline copper cyanide electroplating bath there is added, as a plating accelerator, at least 10 p.p.m. of a water-soluble inorganic selenide compatible with the copper plating bath. Preferably the bath does not contain more than 600 p.p.m. of the selenide which may be sodium selenide or cuprous selenide or potassium selenocyanide. A typical kind of cyanide bath to which the selenide may be aded is one containing per U.S. gallon 4 to 30 ozs. of cuprous cyanide, up to 4.3 ozs. of free potassium cyanide, and 0.5 to 6 ozs. of potassium hydroxide. An equivalent amount of the sodium salt may be used to replace part of the potassium salt. The baths may be operated at 80 to 90 ‹ C. using a copper anode and may also contain 200 to 500 p.p.m. of methylene-bis-α- naphthalene sulphonic acid and a periodic reverse plating technique may be used. If desired, the bath may be agitated, as by rotating the cathode. Specifications 630,165 and 675,565, [Group XVII], are referred to.
