Abstract

Bright silver is electro-deposited from aqueous alkali cyanide baths containing as brightener between 1 and 13 mg/l of cobalt ions, typically provided by potassium cobaltocyanide or cobalt sulphate. Other brightening agents may be included in the bath e. g. alkali metal selenate, carbon disulphide, antimony tatrate, tellurium oxide, potassium selenocyanate or an arsenic compound. Preferably the bath contains also a dispersing agent such as a polymer of a formaldehyde/ aryl sulphonic acid condensate, or a sulphonated hydrocarbon triethanolamine salt, and an anionic sufactant such as a long chain alkyl sulphate. Previously degreased nickel silver may be given a strike plate from a high cyanide silver bath before plating from the bright silver bath which is used at 15 to 35 C. with slow agitation and a current density of 1 to 2 amps/sq. dm.
