Description
In the German patent specification 750185 alkaline reacting complex silver baths are described, which contain an addition of selenium in tetravalent positive form. With the help of these silver baths are coatings of particular hardness and high gloss can be achieved. The disadvantage of silver layers obtained in this way is, however, that the basic material defects are increasingly evident.
Selenium in a divalent negative form is added to the alkaline-reacting complex silver baths according to German Patent 1,081,734. In the silver coatings obtained in this way, the basic material defects no longer appear more pronounced, but it was not possible to completely eliminate this disadvantage. A further disadvantage is that when these electrolytes are used to separate high-gloss precipitates at current densities below 1 A / dm 2, a perfect high-gloss finish is no longer achieved, but the precipitates obtained in this way are always veiled to milky-cloudy.
B. als K2Se, Na2Se oder KCNSe, enthalten, Naphthalinsulfonsäure-Formaldehyd Kondensationsprodukte der Formel It has been found that the disadvantages outlined are eliminated if the alkaline silver baths containing the known basic ingredients, such as. B. complex silver alkali metal cyanide, free alkali metal cyanide, conductive salts such as potassium carbonate and optionally brighteners such as preferably selenium in divalent negative form, z. B. as K 2 Se, Na 2 Se or KCNSe, contain naphthalenesulfonic acid-formaldehyde condensation products of the formula

B. der Alkalisalze, vorzugsweise in einer Konzentration von 0,02 bis 0,5 g je Liter zusetzt.wherein η is an integer from 4 to 6, in the form of their water-soluble salts, e.g. B. the alkali salts, preferably added in a concentration of 0.02 to 0.5 g per liter.
The electrolytes according to the invention, which are unexpectedly insensitive to solid impurities such as. B. mud and dust and which show a clearly leveling effect when silver-plated, allow, even with an addition of only 0.001 to 0.1 g per liter of bivalent negative selenium, mirror-shining precipitates in the wide current density range of 0.1 to 5, 0 A / dm 2 .
Der Glanz wird sofort zu Beginn der Silberabscheidung gebildet, so daß Niederschläge von 0,2 μ Dicke bereits gleich-The silver is deposited in a dense and pore-free manner, the otherwise common methods of pore prevention Wetting agents are not required. The luster is formed immediately at the start of the silver deposition, see above that precipitates of 0.2 μ thickness are already

Because of the large current density range, one can get out of the electrolyte Separate silver precipitates with an exceptionally uniform specular gloss, even if the current density is not set exactly or the objects to be silvered have a complicated shape to have.
The precipitates initially have a hardness of 110 to 120 kg / mm 2 (according to Vickers), which decreases after some time to around 90 kg / mm 2. This hardness, which is still quite high, is essential for the resilience of silver-plated objects, such as B. cutlery, electrical contacts, switches, etc., a valuable advantage against mechanical stress in practice.
In addition, working with the electrolytes according to the invention is surprisingly simple and the Carrying out the electroplating process is absolutely reliable because they are relatively insensitive to inevitable fluctuations in working conditions, e.g. B. Temperature and current density fluctuations. Furthermore, they do not need to contain any wetting agent additives that are harmful during electrolysis May form decomposition products. Thus, the electrolytes according to the invention are in good condition for a long time, safe to operate, so that a filtration or cleaning with activated carbon, as with the known Electrolytes are often necessary, not required.
