Abstract

1,270,902. Electro-plating aluminium with bronze. METAL DYNAMICS Inc. May 12, 1970 [May 21, 1969], No. 23023/70. Heading C7B. Aluminium metal or alloy wire or strip stock is bronze plated for soldering by passing it through a series of at least one of each of the baths: (1) an aqueous alkaline etch bath containing alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. 3-8 oz/gal), and preferably alkali metal gluconate (e.g. 1-4 oz/gal); (2) an aqueous acid oxidizing bath containing HCl and/or HNO 3 and a F compound such as NH 4 HF 2 or HF; (3) an aqueous conditioning bath containing Na or K stannate (e.g. 12-16 oz/gal), alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. 1-3 oz/gal) and preferably Na or K gluconate (e.g. 1-3 oz/gal); and (4) an aqueous bronze electro-plating bath containing at least 1 oz/ / gal of alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. 3-4¢ oz/gal), at least 5 oz/gal of Sn in a stannate compound (e.g. 12-16 oz/gal Na or K stannate) and at least 2À5 oz/gal of Cu in a CN compound (e.g. 12-15 oz/gal 2 KCN, CuCN). The alkali metal may be Na or K. The stock remains in each of the above baths for no greater than 10 seconds for high speed plating, and passes through at least one aqueous rinse bath between each of baths (1) to (3). The stock may further pass as cathode through an aqueous Ni fluoborate electro-plating bath, then through at least one further electro-plating bath comprising an aqueous BF 4 solution of Sn, Cu, Pb-Sn; Pb or Ni. A cathode current density of at least 100 ASF is maintained in the plating baths. After plating, the stock may be drawn to reduce its size.
