Abstract

Articles of aluminium or an aluminium alloy are dipped in a solution of a zincate containing a copper salt to form a coating on which copper, brass, cadmium, silver, gold or other metal is then deposited by electric deposition. Reference is made to a previous proposal to employ such a dipping solution in which however the preliminary coating is removed by nitric acid before electroplating. The preliminary coating may according to the present invention be applied and removed several times but is always renewed before the electroplating step. The concentration of caustic alkali in the zincate solution should be 3-15N and that of zinc at least normal. The content of copper, which should be principally in monovalent form, e.g. as potassium copper cyanide, should be 1,5-8,0 gms. per litre. A reducing agent such as sodium sulphite may be present.
