Abstract

A solution containing zinc chloride, ammonium chloride, and iron chloride, with or without free hydrochloric acid is used as a flux to enable solder consisting of pure lead or lead alloys containing only a small amount of alloying constituents such as tin to be used for soldering iron, zinc, lead, copper, brass, &c. The flux may be made by dissolving zinc in hydrochloric acid and adding ammonium chloride and either metallic iron or a solution of iron chloride, or by dissolving zinc chloride, ammonium chloride, and iron chloride in water or hydrochloric acid. The ratio of ammonium chloride to zinc chloride is preferably between ,5 : 1 and 1 : 1 ; for example zinc may be dissolved to saturation point in hydrochloric acid to which iron has been added, the liquid decanted and 35-40 gms. of ammonium chloride added to each 100 gms. of liquid. If the hydrochloric acid is not completely saturated with the zinc, excess acid can be removed by filtering the liquid through chalk.
