Abstract

593,763. Electroplating aluminium. SOC. ANON. DE GALVANOSTEGIE ALMETA. April 30, 1945, No. 10818. Convention date, April 24, 1944. [Class 41] In plating aluminium or aluminium alloy, grease and any trace of oxide are first removed, a porous layer of nickel is then deposited by electrolysis followed by at least one layer of cadmium or zinc. This may be followed by one or more layers of another metal, e.g. copper, nickel, chromium, silver, gold. The surface preparation may be that described in Specification 593,762 which comprises degreasing, removing the oxide skin, lightly plating with copper and dissolving the copper film in an acid bath. The nickel layer of .003 to .01 m. is deposited in a bath having a pH of 5.6 to 6 containing nickel sulphate, boracic acid and some magnesium or sodium sulphate to improve the conductivity. Cadmium may be deposited to a thickness of .02 mm. from a 0.2-0.6 normal solution of cadmium cyanide or acetate containing also potassium cyanide and dextrine or gelatine having a pH of about 10. Zinc may be deposited from a bath containing zinc and potassium cyanides, sodium hydroxide and dextrine at a temperature of 30-50‹ C., or from a bath containing zinc and ammonium sulphates, potassium aluminium sulphate and gum arabic. An article for use as an electric contact is plated on the cadmium or zinc layer with copper in a bath containing per litre of water 200-250 grms. of copper sulphate and 150-250 grm. of sulphuric acid.
