Abstract

Iron or an iron alloy is prepared for plating by a strong etching to bring out the crystalline structure, and after washing is electroplated with a thin layer of copper from an alkaline bath, then with a substantial layer of copper from an acid bath and is finally subjected to heat treatment at a temperature above 300 DEG C., preferably 400-600 DEG C. The etching may be effected in a bath containing 10 per cent of sulphuric acid and 2 per cent of nitric acid and is carried on until a powerful evolution of hydrogen takes place. The first layer of copper should be 0,002-0,005 mm. in thickness and the second layer at least 0,01 mm. Other metals such as zinc, tin and lead may be applied over the copper electrolytically or from a molten bath, in some cases after an intermediate electrolytic coating of nickel or cobalt. The secondary coatings may be applied before or after the heat treatment.
