Abstract
A process which prevents the formation of an oxide film on a titanium surface comprises etching the surface, rinsing the surface immediately after it has been etched with a rinsing solution containing complexing anions with which titanium forms a soluble complex which always remains soluble in the rinsing and plating solutions, and immediately placing the rinsed surface, with a film of rinsing solution retained thereon, in a plating solution and depositing a film of metal on the titanium surface by electrolytic action. Tartrate, cyanide, citrate or ethylene diamine tetra-acetate anions may form the complexing anions. The initial plating solution, which may be copper or nickel, may already contain said complexing anions before the introduction of the titanium surface. The titanium is etched with concentrated hydrochloric acid having a specific gravity of about 1.8. A noble metal such as platinum may be introduced into the etching solution, either in the form of a salt, or by insertion of a platinum electrode into the etching bath. Further layers of metal may be deposited upon the surface, e.g. chromium on nickel on copper, and finally the electroplated surface may be heat-treated at a temperature of 400-450 DEG C.
