Abstract
509,965. Electroplating. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 21, 1938, No. 27539. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1937. [Class 41] A copper article is coated with silver by first dipping in an acid solution, or an alkaline solution followed by an acid solution, to brighten the copper, coating electrolytically with mercury and electrolytically depositing silver on the mercury surface before any substantial oxidation of the mercury occurs. The mercury-plating solution may contain 1¢ ozs. of mercuric chloride, 4 ozs. of sodium cyanide, 2 ozs. of ammonium chloride, and 1 gallon (U.S.A.) of water. The ferrous metal tank serves as anode. A current of 10-15 amps. per sq. ft. is applied for 3-5 seconds. The article is rinsed in water and transferred to a silver-plating solution containing 4 ozs. of silver cyanide, 6 ozs. of sodium cyanide, ¢ oz. of ammonium chloride and 1 gallon (U.S.A.) of water. Specifications 476,375, [Group XXII], and 492,088 are referred to.
