Abstract
1,185,527. Electrolytic tin-plating of steel sheet. CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DU FER BLANC. July 12, 1967 [Aug.8, 1966], No. 31970/67. Heading C7B. In a method of electrolytically tin-plating sheet steel comprising subjecting sheet steel to alkaline degreasing, pickling in an acid bath, electrolytic preliminary coating, electrolytic tinning using an acid bath, and fusing and cooling the deposited tin, the preliminary metal coating is applied in the acid bath which is used for pickling, which acid bath contains bi-valent metal ions e.g. nickel and/or stannous ions, which can form a metallic electrodeposit in an acid bath when the concentration of bi-valent metal ions is low compared to the hydrogen ion concentration. The metal ions may be introduced into the acid pickling bath by use of a soluble anode, placed among unsoluble anodes, or by introduction of used or excess tinning bath. The pickling/electro-deposition step may be proceeded by a conventional pickling step. A pickling bath containing stannous ions preferably also contains an anti-oxidant such as an acid belonging to the phenosulphonic acid family, e.g. cresolsulphonic acid or phenolsulphonic acid, or a mixture of the latter with sulphuric acid; and non-soluble anodes which may be used in this step include graphite, stainless steel or iron silicon alloy.
