Abstract

760,084. Electrodeposition of antimony. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 29, 1954 [Oct. 23, 1953], No. 28081/54. Class 41. Antimony is cathodically deposited from an aqueous solution of citric acid, the acidic hydrogen atoms of-which are partially replaced by an alkali metal or ammonium, and either an antimony compound, other than potassium antimonyl tartrate, such as antimony chloride, sulphate or acetate, and sodium benzoate or propionate; or potassium antimonyl tartrate, preferably with the addition of sodium benzoate or propionate. The cathode may be lead, indium, copper, iron, steel, zinc, tin, cadmium, or alloys of lead with indium or antimony. Electrolysis is effected at a cathode current density of 25 to 30 amps./sq. ft. at a bath temperature of 125‹ to 150‹ F. at a pH 4 to 6 using a consumable antimony anode although an inert anode may be used. Typically a metal article electroplated with a smooth coating of lead, indium, or an alloy of lead and indium has a flash coating of antimony deposited on it at a cathode current density of 7 to 10 amps./ sq. ft. from an aqueous bath of pH 5 containing per U.S. gallon 2 to 2.5 ozs. of potassium antimonyl tartrate, 10 to 12 ozs. of sodium citrate, 3 to 4 ozs. of citric acid. A thicker coating of antimony is deposited on this as previously indicated from a bath containing per U.S. gallon 10 to 12 ozs. of potassium antimonyl tartrate, 18 to 20 ozs. of sodium citrate, 6 to 7 ozs. of citric acid, and 0.5 ozs. sodium benzoate. Nickel or chomium may be then plated on it.
