Abstract
509,577. Electrodeposition of zinc. HUBBELL, J. P., and WEISBERG, L. Dec. 1, 1938, No. 35037. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1937. [Class 41] Zinc is deposited by electrolysis from a concentrated ammoniacal zinc solution containing free ammonia at a current density of 500- 1,000 amps. per sq. ft. The electrolyte is prepared from low grade ores, raw zinc ash, or sal skimmings by leaching with ammonia and ammonium salts. Chlorides and small quantities of cadmium and copper may be present. Iron is oxidised by hydrogen peroxide and is then filtered off. The electrolyte contains 80-150 g. per litre of zinc and at least 8g. per litre of free ammonia. Insoluble anodes of gas carbon, graphite, or stainless steel are used and the temperature maintained at about 30C. either by cooling means within the cell or by circulating the electrolyte through cooling pipes. Agitation is effected, either by mechanical means, or by drawing wire to be coated through the bath at a speed of at least 120 ft. per minute, sufficient to cause turbulent flow of the electrolyte. Exhausted electrolyte is regenerated by using it to leach fresh zincbearing material.
