771,695. Electrodeposition of iron-chromium alloys. YOSHIDA, T. Aug. 5, 1954, No. 22845/54. Class 41. Iron-chromium alloys are deposited by electrolysis of an aqueous bath having a ratio by weight of trivalent chromium to divalent iron greater than 1.3 and containing per litre 10-63 gms. trivalent chromium, 5-40 gms. divalent iron, and 100-264 gms. of urea, and an amount of sulphate radical at least stoichiometrically equivalent to the total content of trivalent chromium and divalent iron, the bath having been brought to equilibrium as regards complex ions by keeping it at a constant temperature between 25‹ and 55‹ C., the time for attaining equilibrium ranging correspondingly from 270 to 8 hours. For a practical process, additional sulphate and chloride ions are added to increase the bath conductivity and to speed up anode dissolution. Typically the bath contains per litre 160 gms. chromium sulphate, 60 gms. ferrous sulphate, 200 gms. ammonium sulphate, 180 gms. urea, and 10 gms. ammonium chloride and was employed at 40‹ C. after having beeen held at this temperature for 50 hours, using as anode an iron-chromium alloy containing 18 per cent chromium at a cathode current density of 15 amps./sq. dm. to deposit an alloy containing 21 per cent chromium.
