Abstract
548,184. Coating metal articles. STANDARD STEEL SPRING CO. Jan. 19, 1942, No. 777. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1940. [Class 41] Iron and steel and other metal articles are protected against corrosion by means of an electrolytically applied coating of zinc containing from 3 to 24 per cent (preferably 11 to 18 per cent) of nickel. The articles may first be given a thin undercoat of nickel or copper. The zinc and nickel are applied from an electrolyte containing zinc sulphate or chloride and nickel chloride and acetic, formic, or citric acid, soluble anodes of the metals being preferably employed. A current density from 100 to 1,000 (preferably 300 to 700) amperes or more per square foot of cathode surface is employed, the bath temperature being between 100‹ F. and 150‹ F.
