Abstract
830,205. Electrodeposition of ferrochrome alloys. YOSHIDA, T. Dec. 17, 1957 [April 15, 1957], No. 39152/57. Class 41. An iron-chromium alloy containing 5 to 40% chromium is electrodeposited at 25 to 55 C. from an aqueous bath containing per litre 37 to 200 gms. anhydrous chromic sulphate, 29 to 185 gms. anhydrous ferrous sulphate, 32 to 330 gms. ammonium sulphate, 60 to 264 gms. urea, and 0.055 to 88.74 gms. of one or more magnesium, aluminium, or manganous sulphate, the ratio of trivalent chromium to divalent iron being from 0.3 to 3.2 : 1 and the bath being held before electrolysis for at least 4 hours at a temperature between 25 and 55 C. Examples are given of electroplating brass and electrolytically coppered steel articles with iron-chromium alloys using bagged anodes of commercial ferrochrome alloys. Preferably the pH is in the range 1.7 to 2.5, scrap iron is hung in the bath to reduce ferric iron formed in the bath and replace the ferrous iron content, and addition agents such as fluorides, oxalates, citrates, or the corresponding acids, hydrazine or its salts, and a surface-active agent may be included in the bath. Specifications 715,225, 771,695, and U.S.A. Specification 2,693,444 are referred to.
