Abstract

526,854. Electrolytic surface treatment of metals. STEVENS, A. H. (Battelle Memorial Institute). March 27, 1939, No. 9520. [Class 41] A polished appearance is produced on metals, particularly steel, stainless steel, nickel, nickel alloys and copper by anodic treatment in a bath containing sulphuric acid and a phosphoric acid in a combined concentration of at least 50 per cent. by weight. The bath may contain 15-60 per cent. of sulphuric acid and 15-70 per cent. of orthophosphoric acid. For treating steel containing not above 6 per cent. of alloying ingredients, the bath should contain in addition 0.5-20 per cent. of chromic acid.
