Abstract
Prior to electroplating with zinc, a magnesium alloy die cast panel of percentage composition 90.2 parts Mg, 9 parts Al, 0.2 part Mn, and 0.6 part Zn is brightened and smoothed by immersion in an aqueous pickling solution containing by weight 28 per cent of chromium trioxide, 2.5 per cent of 70 per cent aqueous nitric acid, 0.8 per cent of 52 per cent aqueous hydrofluoric acid, and is then activated by immersion in an aqueous bath containing by weight 20 per cent of 85 per cent aqueous phosphoric acid and 10 per cent of ammonium bifluoride.
