Abstract
506,466. Treatment of anodized magnesium. BUZZARD, R. W. June 27, 1938, No. 18981. Convention date, June 29, 1937. [Class 41] The corrosion resistance of coatings produced on magnesium and magnesium base alloys by an odic treatment is improved by immersion in a hot acid reacting solution containing (i) a chromate and/or dichromate, and (ii) a soluble sulphate, phosphate, borate or fluoride or a salt of chromium or manganese or a combination of these salts The immersion liquid is preferably at or near its boiling point. The concentration of the immersion bath may be from 0À25 per cent up to saturation. Suitable baths contain (i) 1-30 per cent of sodium, potassium or ammonium dichromate, 8-12 per cent manganous sulphate, (ii) 1-30 per cent sodium, potassium or ammonium dichromate, 0À25-10 per cent chromium fluoride, (iii) 8-12 per cent sodium, potassium or anunon- ium dichromate, 3-7 per cent sodium borate, (iv) 8-12 per cent sodium, potassium or ammonium dichromate, 8-12 per cent sodium phosphate, (v) 1-3 per cent zinc chromate, 3-7 per cent sodium dichromato, 1-3 per cent chromium fluoride. The treatment may comprise immersion in a bath containing a chromate and/or dichromate and a phosphate followed by immersion in a bath containing a dichromate, manganous sulphate and chromium fluoride. The anodizing bath may contain 10 per cent of sodium, potassium or ammonium dichromate and 2 per cent of monobasic sodium or ammonium phosphate.
