Abstract
An acid solution for coating Zn and Zn-base alloys is prepared by dissolving in water CrO3 and Cr2(SO4)3.6-7H2O so that the total content of hexavalent chromium (calculated as CrO3) and trivalent chromium (calculated as anhydrous Cr2(SO4)3) is 2-30 g/l, the ratio of hexavalent to trivalent chromium, calculated in the same way, is 0.2-7.0 by weight, and the pH is 1.8-2.8. The solution is preferably made up by diluting an aqueous concentrate, and may be replenished by the addition of CrO3 + Cr2(SO4)3 together with H2SO4 if the pH needs adjusting. Coatings may be formed on Zn foil, Zn-base die castings, and hot-dip and electrolytically galvanized iron and steel.
