Abstract
In a method of coating zinc and zinc alloys or cadmium or p cadmium alloys as described in Specifications 586,517 and 586,542, a chromicsulphuric acid mixture contains not less than 0.5 per cent. trivalent chromium, 3 to 16 per cent. free or combined chromic acid and between 0.5 per cent. and 4 per cent. free sulphuric acid, the ratio of hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium being not less than 3:1 and the ratio of hexavalent chromium to sulphuric acid being not less than 2:1 and not greater than 20:1. Two examples of the solution are given in each case the quantity of trivalent chromium is obtained by the presence of sodium bisulphite as a reducing agent. An oxidising agent may also be present, e.g., sodium nitrate to the amount of one-fifth to one-tenth of the total chromic acid, or an equivalent proportion of another oxidising agent. A wetting agent and an acid inhibitor are also preferably included. The proportion of trivalent chromium should not exceed 1.5 per cent. to produce satisfactory films.
