Abstract

Articles made of aluminium or of alloys containing at least 50 per cent of aluminium are coloured by producing an absorbent aluminium-oxide coating on the surface and colouring the coating by a mordanted basic dyeing compound. The oxide coating may be produced, for instance, by applying solutions of sulphuric acid, chromic acid, sodium sulphate, sodium acid sulphate, sodium carbonate, potassium dichromate, phosphoric acid and its salts, ammonium citrate or lactate, or citric acid and its salts. The solutions may be applied by spraying or immersion. In an example, the article is immersed in a solution of sodium carbonate and potassium dichromate heated to boiling point.
