Abstract

416,608. Electrolytic surface treatment of tin and tin alloys. CAMPBELL, SIR J., 76, Courtfield Gardens, Kensington, MACNAUGHTAN,D. J., and TAIT, W. H., 378, Strand, both in London. July 25, 1933, No. 20988. [Class 41.] Tin or a tin alloy or an article thereof is provided with a protective oxide coating by anodic treatment in a mildly alkaline solution or alternatively in an oxidizing solution. Suitable alkaline solutions are 1 per cent caustic soda or sodium carbonate, 3 per cent sodium phosphate or borate, or ammonia or ammonium carbonate over a wider range of concentration. Suitable oxidizing solutions are those of potassium permanganate, sodium chromate, chromic acid or picric acid. The concentration of picric acid may be 1-10 per cent, preferably 1-2 per cent. The cathode may be of carbon, iron, steel, nickel or cobalt. The coatings may be coloured by immersion, after washing, in an aqueous, preferably slightly acid solution of an aniline, alizarin or anthracene dye ; they may be further coated with cellulose lacquer or other varnish.
