Abstract

421,696. Electrolytic surface treatment of zinc. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C., 65, Chancery Lane, London..-(New Jersey Zinc Co. ; 160, Front Street, New York, U.S.A.) Jan. 13, 1934, No. 1332. [Class 41] Zinc and alloys consisting mainly thereof are provided with an insoluble coating resistant to weathering or corrosion by anodic treatment in a substantially neutral electrolyte containing an alkali metal ferrocyanide, ferricyanide, dichromate, oxalate or molybdate or ammonium oxalate or molybdate or more than one of these substances. Suitable baths are those containing 35 gms. of crystalline ammonium oxalate or 50 gms. of crystalline potassium ferrocyanide per litre. The metal surface may first be cleaned bv cathodic treatment in a bath containing 45 gms. of tri-sodium phosphate per litre of water. The coatings may be painted, lacquered or dyed. Coloured coatings may be obtained by addition of a dye to the electrolyte.
