Abstract

1292699 Colour anodizing aluminium CEGEDUR G P 16 July 1970 [21 July 1969] 34473/70 Heading C7B A coloured (e.g. bronze) protective coating resistant to corrosion and ultraviolet rays is produced on an article of Al or alloy thereof, e. g. containing 0À6% Mg or 0À5% each of Si and Mg or 1% each of Si, Mg and Mn, by forming a porous layer of alumina thereon e. g. by anodizing in a 50g/l sulphuric or chromic acid bath using D.C. or A.C., and depositing a metal pigment into the pores of the layer by A. C. electrolysis from an aqueous acid (e.g. 3À2- 4À7 pH solution containing Ni SO 4 e. g. 1-200g/l NiCl 2 e.g. 1-500g/l, and optionally (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 and H 3 BO 3 e. g. each 1-100g/l. The A. C. may be either at constant density at 0À1-5 A/dm<SP>2</SP> or at constant voltage at 5-80 V; the counterelectrode may be of Ni or stainless steel. The coloured layer may be sealed with boiling water which may contain Ni acetate. Prior to coating, the article may be pickled in 50g/l soda solution and immersed in HNO 3 with intermittent rinsing.
