Abstract

1,216,440. Colouring anodized aluminium. ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Sept. 4, 1969 [Sept.23, 1968], No. 43929/ 69. Heading C7B. An anodized aluminium metal or alloy workpiece is coloured e.g. bronze by passing A.C. between it and a counter-electrode whilst immersed in an acidic solution of a Ni or Co salt, in which the pH is maintained between 4À7 and 7 and Al ions are maintained at a value not less than 2 p. p. m. or sufficient to maintain saturation, whichever is the less, to electro-deposit an oxide or hydroxide of Ni or Co. The effect of the above pH is to suppress the dissolved Al ions to a value below 10 p. p. m. The solution may be made up with 15-40g/1 each of NiSO 4 . 7H 2 O and H 3 BO 3 with 10-20g/l (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , preferably also 2-30g/l MgSO 4 .7H 2 O, to which is added 0À06-0À12g/l Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . 18H 2 O (equivalent to 5-10 p. p. m. Al ions); CoSO 4 may be substituted for NiSO 4 . The counterelectrode may be of Ni(or Co) or graphite. Other Al compounds maybe added, e.g. acetate or hydroxide. Anodizing may be effected, using D.C., in aqueous H 2 SO 4 , CrO 3 or a sulphonic acid e. g. sulphosalicylic acid.
