Abstract

1,150,882. Colour-anodizing aluminium and its alloys. ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. July 5, 1966 [July 14, 1965], No.29940/65. Heading C7B. Coloured anodic oxide coatings are produced on aluminium or its alloys by anodic treatment in an aqueous bath of which a major proportion is oxalic acid by using pulsed squarewave D.C., the ratio of anode peak current density to anode mean current density being at least 3:1. Typically the mean current density is 10 to 36 amps/ sq. ft. and the pulse frequency is 1¢ to 20 pulses per second. Examples are given of using saturated oxalic acid baths at 20‹ C. also of baths containing, in addition to oxalic acid, sulphuric or formic acids. For increasing the darkening of the film obtained on an aluminium alloy containing silicon and magnesium, the alloy is overaged by heat treatment before anodizing.
