Abstract
A sparkling appearance is produced on an Albase alloy containing 5 to 9% Si by homogenizing the alloy by heating for 50 to 70 hours at a temperature below the eutectic temperature of the alloy, ca. 1000 DEG C., hot rolling the alloy to form a plate, preferentially removing Al from the alloy surface layer to expose protruding particles of Si, and anodizing the treated alloy to produce an anodic coating containing a random distribution of embedded Si particles. The Al removal may be effected with NaOH solution preceded by a HF-HNO3 or if desired a H3PO4-HNO3 pre-etc and may be followed by a HF-HNO3 desmutting dip. Anodizing is effected at 70 DEG F. in sulphuric acid with a C.D. of 10 to 20 A.S.F. with an initial voltage of 17.5 and a terminal voltage of 22. The treated alloy may also contain 0.4 to 0.7% Cr or a small amount of Fe.
