Abstract

1,137,304. Anodizing aluminium; alloys. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. Nov.3, 1966 [Nov. 5, 1965], No.49391/66. Headings C7A and C7B. A method of producing a grey oxide coating on an article of an aluminium alloy containing 0À5 - 2% silicon and 0À4 - 1% iron with or without one or more of copper, e.g. up to 0À2%; manganese, e.g. up to 0À8%; chromium, e.g. up to 0À4%; titanium, e.g. up to 0À1%; and magnesium e.g. up to 1%, as incidental elements comprises annealing the alloy at a temperature between 550‹ C. and the solidus temperature of the alloy e. g. within the range 570 - 620‹ C. for 1 - 24 hours, hotworking the alloy by rolling, extrusion or forging to form the article and subsequently anodizing the article in an electrolyte containing sulphuric acid. Anodizing may be carried out using direct, alternating or pulsating current. The electrolyte may also contain oxalic acid and mineral salts, e. g. aluminium sulphate. In an example the articles formed are hot-hardened at 180‹ C. and pickled in ammonium bifluoride prior to anodizing.
