Abstract

1,235,918. Electro-deposition of surfactant coating on metal. ELEKTROCHEMISCHE MATERIALBESCHICHTUNG m. b. H. GES FUR [trading as ECM GES FUR ELEKTROCHEMISCHE MATERIALBESCHICHTUNG m.b.H. & CO. K. G.] July 19, 1968 [July 21, 1967], No.34633/68. Heading C7B. To protect a metal or metal alloy from corrosion and/or to improve the adhesion to said metal or alloy of a lacquer coating or a coating of plastics material, the metal or alloy is connected as an electrode in an aqueous bath containing one or more surfactants and a current is passed through the bath to deposit on the metal or alloy a coating consisting substantially of surfactant material, the coating subsequently being subjected to a heat-treatment, typically in the range of 80 to 200‹ C. Preferably the aqueous bath contains 1 to 100 g/l of surfactant material such as fatty acid condensation products; sodium salts of alkyl sulphosuccinates or Turkey red oil; alkyl sulphates, phosphates or sulphonates; or alkyl aryl sulphonates as anionic surfactants which may be anodically deposited: N-alkyl pyridinium or alkyl ammonium salts as cationic surfactants which may be cathodically deposited: or polyoxyalkylene adducts as nonionic surfactants which may be deposited under either anodic or cathodic action. For anodic deposition an oxygen acceptor e.g. hydrazine may be included in the bath while for cathodic deposition a hydrogen acceptor e.g. hydrogen peroxide may be present in the bath. In examples metal panels of iron or aluminium are initially cathodically degreased prior to coating. For the formation of coatings on magnesium, aluminium or their alloys the bath also includes potassium fluoride and is used at pH 6 to 14. The coating may be effected in two stages, e.g. cathodic deposition of a cationic surfactant followed by anodic deposition of an anionic surfactant or vice versa, or electrolytic deposition of a surfactant followed by non- electro-chemical deposition of a further surfactant.
