Abstract
1451145 Phosphate coating; electrolytic phosphate coating PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES Ltd 22 Feb 1974 [27 Feb 1973] 8093/74 Headings C7B and C7U Aluminium phosphate corrosion resistant coatings on metal surfaces such as iron, steel, zinc or zinc-galvanized steel, aluminium or aluminium alloys are produced by immersion or spraying with phosphating solutions of pH 1À5 to 3À5 containing phosphate and aluminium ions. The solution composition is 0À01 to 10 g/litre (preferably 0À2-3 g/litre) aluminium ions from compounds such as aluminium nitrate, hydroxide or sulphate, 1 to 100 g/litre (preferably 5-50 g/litre) phosphate ions from phosphoric acid, sodium dehydrogen phosphate or desodium hydrogen phosphate, with nitrate and/or chlorate ions up to 20 g/litre (preferably 1-5 g/l) and/or nickel ions up to 5 g/litre (preferably 0À01-2 g/l) as optional oxidizing or coating promotors. Up to 10 g/litre sulphate ions may be added to increase coating weight. Coating may be either by immersion dipping for 1-5minutes at 30-90‹C or by electrolytic conversion using either alternating or direct current techniques. Saline spray testing of coated samples showed similar or improved corrosion resistance over conventially coated samples made by zinc or iron phosphating or chromating.
