Abstract
1,199,089. Electrolytic coating. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. Nov.22, 1968 [Nov.22, 1967], No.55619/68. Heading C7B. A metal article e.g. a flexible strip 5 is treated in an aqueous electrolyte 2 containing hexavalent chromium ions (e.g. 3-50 g/l) and borate ions (e.g. 5-50 g/l), preferably added as chromic and boric acid or anhydride or alkali metal or ammonium (di) chromate and borate e.g. sodium dichromate and borax, first as an anode, then immediately as a cathode, e.g. by passing successively between pairs of plate cathodes 6 and anodes 7 and over conductor rollers 3 and 8 and deflector rollers 4 as shown, to improve the corrosion resistance of the article surface. The anodic and cathodic treatment can be each for only 0À2-10 seconds and thus applied to the continuous process of treating moving bars, wires, pipes or sheets. The strip may be of degreased and pickled steel, Al or Sn plated steel or galvanized.
