Abstract
A metal article is electrolytically treated as cathode in an aqueous solution comprising 5-50g/l hexavalent Cr ion and 10-200 ppm halogen ion, the pH of the solution being adjusted to below 1.3 and the temperature kept at 10-80 DEG C. It is suggested that the corrosion resistant film produced by the treatment is of chromium chromate. The Cr6+ may be supplied by chromic anhydride, a dichromate or a chromate and the halogen ion by HCl, HF, a chloride, a fluoride, a fluotitanate or boron fluoride. Cr3+ may be added, e.g. as chromium acetate, to improve the dryability and H3PO4 to improve paint adhesiveness and uniformity of the deposit. The colour of the film depends on its thickness. Prior to the electrodeposition, the article, e.g. a steel sheet which may be galvanized or Al plated, may be defatted and be painted with a solution containing Cr6+. After electrodeposition, residual solution on the article may be dried or washed off.
